Pachyderm Don’t Play that Way [Nov. 10th, 2009|12:51 pm]
cuteoverload

It happened so fast that he barely heard the massive snorf or felt the violent whoosh of air. But when he looked down, Paul realized that his entire forearm had been sucked up her trunk, and the look in her eyes said, “I don’t have to give it back, you know.” It was the first and last time Paul would play “I got your nose!” with Ellafante.

Oh honey, you best let go of that peanut if you want to keep your dignity.

That’s a risky little game, Christoph G.

Hey! Furoku and books for sale~ I'm selling my Japanese edition of CLAMP School Detectives volume 1 and 2 and is also helping my friend ([info]animationfreak) to sell her Shin Shunkaden bunko and CLAMP no Kiseki 1-3 in English.

Ships internationally, PayPal only! Serious buyers only!!! I'm in need of money so I had offers for items but they couldn't buy them!

My CLAMP School Detectives are in excellent condition but there's a small damage at the lower left corner of the inside cover although overall, there is some slight damage to the books as they're stored too long in the bookstore. They were the last copies in the bookstores :) I don't have volume 3 as it was sold out ):
Selling for US$ 12-14, please feel free to haggle!

The Shin Shunkaden bunko is used (since she bought it from another seller) and the exterior is worn out including the inside and outside covers although the interior is still in good condition. This is the normal version of the bunko published by Hakusensha under the Hakusensha Bunko imprint. Price would be around 2-4USD.

The CLAMP no Kiseki volumes 1-3 (owned by [info]animationfreak) is selling for US$ 55 shipped to United States. They are in good condition but slight damaged and dirty in some places. This was the last copies in the bookstore and was bought in a low price. The chess pieces and booklets are included but the box containing the chess pieces are not going to be included since shipping would certainly be higher. Here is folder for all the pictures of CLAMP no Kiseki/Shin Shunkaden/CLAMP School Detectives. The set is in English which was published by Tokyopop.

Check out other items too!

Phoenix: Impossibly Airy, Amazingly Awesome Pancakes at Matt's Big Breakfast [Nov. 9th, 2009|02:53 pm]

Matt's Big Breakfast

801 North 1st Street, Phoenix AZ 85004 (at East McKinley; map); 602-254-1074; mattsbigbreakfast.com

My recent pizza tour of the West Coast included a quick, 22-hour stop in Phoenix, where, before leaving town, I visited Matt's Big Breakfast.

The eponymous owner is Matt Pool, who started this popular breakfast spot shortly after leaving Bar Bianco. Bar Bianco is the watering hole that pizzaman Chris Bianco opened next door to his legendary Pizzeria Bianco, where the thinking has always been use only the best ingredients and prepare them in a simple manner that lets them shine on their own. Unsurprisingly, Pool learned this lesson well and employs the same philosophy at Big Breakfast.

So along with a few unexpected twists (a soppressata scramble, a pork rib chop), you'll find comfort-breakfast staples: bacon and eggs, hash browns, home fries, waffles, and omelets. Oh, and griddlecakes, which is what I ended up ordering after reading about them on PHX Rail Food.

The griddlecakes at Matt's are light, impossibly airy, a little flaky, a little sweet, and, best of all, just slightly crisp on the surface.

OK. This may seem like a digression, but trust me. I make my peanut butter and honey sandwiches on whole wheat. I spread one slice of bread with peanut butter and the other with honey. You know, because you can't drizzle honey onto the peanut butter, since that doesn't really work. But sometimes I get distracted and let the slices sit before pressing them together. When that's the case, something seems to happen to the honey side. I don't know whether the sugar in the honey starts to crystallize or what, but that honey slice of bread seems to get this slightly crisp texture to it. Try it. You'll see.

And that type of crispness is exactly the type of crispness that Matt's griddlecakes had.

Served with a dollop of sweet cream butter and real maple syrup, these things are heaven. And that's from someone who's more a savory bacon-and-eggs guy than a sweet waffles-or-pancakes guy.

I had heard and read good things about Matt's before eating there, so it was hard for me to break character and go for these griddlecakes. I really wanted to try one of the egg dishes. But it's rare that I find truly memorable hotcakes, and I figured this might be the place. It was, and I don't regret ordering these at all. In fact, I'm dreaming of them a little more than a week later.

20091109-mbb-homefries.jpg

I accidentally ended up ordering a side of home fries. I misread the menu and got the notion that all dishes came with toast and hash browns or home fries when in fact it's only the egg dishes that do. Anyway, the home fries are perfectly cooked—crisp but not burnt on the outside and soft in the middle—but they're tossed with rosemary, which I find a little much after a few bites. I'm kicking myself now for misreading that menu. Had I realized I was adding a side dish to my order, I would have made it an egg instead. Oh well, there's always next time. (And I do hope to make it back to Phoenix for a next time.)

20091109-mbb-guy-ate-here.jpg

Yes, if Matt's Big Breakfast sounds familiar, it's because it was featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives in March 2008.

Regardless of what you think about Fieri—believe it or not, a lot of people think he's an asshat—every one of the places I've been to that he's visited has been awesome. So he may be annoying on some level, but he knows how to pick 'em.

As you can expect, a place with this level of notoriety gets pretty crowded. It's open Tuesdays through Sundays from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. People in Phoenix seem to get up pretty early. I got there at 7:10 a.m. and wasn't able to get in immediately. (Granted, I did get a table for one in about 10 minutes, though.)

Title: Haunted
Author: Amber Michelle // [info]myaru
Rating: T
Warnings: n/a
Word count: 4702
Prompt: Fire Emblem 10 - Sephiran/Zelgius - the nuances of master and servant - You are my army and I would command / “Attack the Holy land”

Summary: set after the Mad King's War, but before RD. Sephiran and Zelgius make a pilgrimage to Serenes.

A/N: as I haven't technically completed PoR, my references to the battle between Ike and the Black Knight are based on what I recall from RD and reading the PoR script ages ago - meaning, probably inaccurate.

Word count: 3185
Prompt: Transformers G1: Motormaster/Silverbolt: Courtship - "Sticks and stones may break my bones/But whips and chains excite me/Throw me down and tie me up/And show me that you like me."
Summary: Silverbolt’s prisoner on Decepticon base, and he’s been given to Motormaster. Can’t really call it Non-con cause Bolt purposely encourages Moto. Plot? What plot? This is all porn, despite the word count.
Author’s note: Title FailThanks to the wonderful mjfastlane for being my beta and for braving my addiction to run-on sentences and as well as the word “and.”
It says something about me that the first proper smut I write is a pairing I’m still very new to. So crit would be appreciated, thanks!

Human/Cyborg head analogue? [Nov. 10th, 2009|02:45 pm]

little_details

[gemfyre]
I'm trying to write a bit of Terminator based fic and want John Connor to be practising opening up the head of a terminator to remove the chip. This involves cutting out a flap of scalp (pretty humanlike) and then opening a sealed compartment by using a screwdriver to prise it open (if you've seen T2 of T:SCC you'll know what I mean).

What could he practice on that's easily obtainable? Anything? I know students practice stitching on orange peels sometimes but a peel isn't really big enough to be an analogue of a whole head. Any ideas on what he could use to replicate the chip compartment?

Googling "Human head analogue" and "Human scalp skull analogue" doesn't help at all.

ETA : This is set before Judgment Day. Pigs are still kinda hard for a regular suburban teenager trying to live underneath the radar to come across though. ;)

Purple/Violet Eyes! [Nov. 9th, 2009|09:39 pm]

little_details

[mood |hopeful]

Googled: medical conditions: violet purple eyes; violet eyes, natural violet eyes

Setting: Present day, America

Issue: I have a character with purple eyes. She’s had purple eyes since the story was first forming in my head, and I am loathe to change them to another color. Will if I have to, but there may be tears. And slight Plot Holes, as her purple eyes are sort of necessary to a few plot points.

I understand that purple eyes are RIDICULOUSLY rare, but that they do occasionally happen. I’m wondering if there are medical conditions (besides albinism) or any medications that can cause purple eyes. If anyone could give some google-able terms or even links, I'd be super appreciative.

Pretty much anything will help. Thanks!

PS: I’ve heard that while Elizabeth Taylor did have purple-hued eyes, they were caused by medical problems as a child. Any truth in this?

Savory Cinnamon (Breakfast) Recipes [Nov. 9th, 2009|12:17 pm]

cooking

[thawhidol]
My friend and I do a monthly booze dinner, which is basically like an Iron Chef night where the secret ingredient is a type of alcohol. Every part of the menu either includes the ingredient or complements it. Previous nights have included basil vodka, chai liqueur, red wine, pumpkin beer, and tequila.

Well, this month is cinnamon. I'm making some more cinnamon vodka, and we'll probably supplement that with cinnamon schnapps or liqueur. What's more, this is going to be a brinner (breakfast + dinner) sleepover for some friends. We're going to cook and watch cartoons all night.

Part of our menu is obvious, as cinnamon french toast and cinnamon rolls are tops. We'll probably also make some cinnamon bacon, though I am not sure that I can stomach bacon for a while after this weekend's bacon party (and bacon explosion). But what I am looking for are savory cinnamon recipes.

Can anyone suggest savory cinnamon dishes. Hopefully they will be breakfast appropriate, but if not I will find a way to adapt. If they are vegetarian, so much the better, but if not some people just won't eat it.

Lunch Today: Homemade Tomato Soup and Roasted Garlic Hummus [Nov. 9th, 2009|12:42 pm]

cooking

[dangerdourk]
This tomato soup is my new obsession, and my roommates and I have been guzzling the stuff like it's the elixir of life. I'm pretty sure that it sharpens the mind, improves the senses, and regulates your digestive system. At the very least it's wonderfully comforting on a cold rainy night. The hummus is a little fancier than the simple version I normally make, really great for garlic lovers.
